From 10-18 February 2018, Nelson will once again host 30 of the country's top young chamber musicians for eight intensive days of rehearsals, coaching, masterclasses and performances at the Adam Summer School. We're delighted to announce two new tutors who will join the NZSQ this year: Stephen De Pledge and Elke Dunlop.
Stephen De Pledge teaches piano at the University of Auckland and performs internationally as a soloist and chamber musician. He has collaborated with Viktoria Mullova, Felicity Lott and Evelyn Glennie, toured with the principal wind players of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and given chamber music performances at the Edinburgh Festival and at the Wigmore Hall. As a concert soloist, Stephen has performed with the Philharmonia (London), Bournemouth Symphony, BBC Scottish Symphony, New London, New Zealand Symphony and Auckland Philharmonia orchestras. Stephen's discography includes chamber music by Messiaen, Shostakovich and Schnittke, as well as piano works by Bliss, Gorecki and Pärt and songs by Ned Rorem and Samuel Barber.
Elke Dunlop will offer classes in the Feldenkrais Method of 'awareness through movement'. Elke’s involvement in movement education spans more than 25 years and includes teaching at Toi Whakaari (NZ Drama School) and The NZ School of Music for many years. She has a busy private Feldenkrais clinic in Wellington and has been working with members of the NZSQ since 2002. She will work with students on the prevention of overuse syndrome, reducing aches, pains and stress and improving inner communication.
The students have been placed in chamber ensembles to work on specific repertoire over the week and will present those works in two Finale Concerts on Sunday 18 February at 3.30pm and 8pm at Old St John's. Grace Stainthorpe, Claire McSweeney, Grant Baker and Lavinnia Rae will also perform as the Troubadour Quartet, giving performances around the Nelson region in the week following the summer school.
