About the event

New Zealand String Quartet at Orokonui Ecosanctuary

Join the New Zealand String Quartet for an evening of toe-tapping, awe-inspiring, boundary-pushing chamber music. After a sold-out concert in 2024, the NZSQ are returning to Orokonui Ecosanctuary with a brand-new programme of fresh and familiar music for string quartet.

Salina Fisher Tōrino – echoes on pūtōrino improvisations by Rob Thorne

Dmitri Shostakovich String Quartet No.3 in F major, Op. 73

Edvard Grieg String Quartet in G minor, Op. 27

In the café, against the stunning backdrop of Orokonui’s protected forest at sunset, you’ll be immersed in music that bridges the ancient and modern. Beginning with Tōrino – echoes on pūtōrino improvisations by Rob Thorne, a powerful and haunting piece by New Zealand composer Salina Fisher, to the raw, emotional intensity of Shostakovich’s 3rd String Quartet and finishing with the passionate, Nordic drama of Grieg’s sweeping G minor Quartet.

Across their 2025 Season, the NZSQ wants to help you discover the joy of chamber music. Whether you're a life-long fan, a nature enthusiast, or simply looking for a memorable night out, this concert is not to be missed.

The concert programme, crafted in the NZSQ’s signature style, aims to engage audiences of all levels of familiarity with chamber music. Each piece of music is preceded by a lively and informative introduction delivered by the Quartet members themselves. These introductions seek to shed light on the stories behind the music, making it an enriching experience suitable for all audiences.

For all of our South Island concerts in May, Gill and Peter will be joined by two talented guest musicians:

Arna Morton - Guest Violin

Callum Hall - Guest Cello
