The Brahms Recordings

Figuring out an interpretation that will stand the test of time is one of the greatest challenges we can set ourselves - Helene Pohl (1st violin)

Help us get our 2nd Brahms CD over the line

We’re really on a roll with the music of Brahms and feel honoured that Naxos International has engaged us to record the complete works for string quartet/quintet by Brahms over a three-year period.

The first CD in the Brahms series was released in July this year, with Classics Today reviewer David Vernier giving it 10/10 for performance and saying “[the NZSQ] deliver[s] aggressive, uninhibited, and yes, passionate expressions of these scores, respectful of the composer while always working to realize the fullness of the music that Brahms struggled so long and hard to create.”  Read more in our story Naxos Brahms reviewed.

We’re now raising money for the second disc in the 3-CD project, featuring the String Quartet no. 3 and the Clarinet Quintet with internationally acclaimed clarinettist James Campbell, who toured New Zealand with us in 2014 for Chamber Music New Zealand.

This 2nd Brahms recording represents the end of an era, as it is the last of our recordings with our long-time colleague Doug Beilman. Between us we brought 20 collective years of study and performance of these pieces to produce one of our most compelling and penetrating recordings to date. We’re excited to share our interpretations of these great works for the enjoyment of our audiences today and as a lasting legacy in years to come.

We laid down the music tracks in Toronto last year but we have yet to meet production costs of $14,000 to complete the CD. We receive no recording fee or royalties for this CD to offset the costs involved. Nonetheless, we feel it is vital to undertake a project such as this, not only for the enrichment of audiences today and in the future, but to maintain our international reputation for excellence.

As well as being released on CD, this recording will be available in the online Naxos Music Library, an invaluable resource for universities, music schools, public libraries, schools, music professionals and collectors.

We hope you will help us turn these raw recordings into a polished CD for music lovers to enjoy.
