Christopher’s Classics 2016

August 2016

Christopher’s Classics Series XXI - 2016 presents the 'New Zealand String Quartet with pianist Stephen De Pledge'.

A new violinist and a new venue

In this concert, the New Zealand String Quartet introduces recently appointed second violinist Monique Lapins to Christopher’s Classics audiences. The concert also features renowned pianist Stephen De Pledge. The performance will take place at The Piano, an exciting new purpose-built concert hall featuring state of the art acoustics and staggered seating for excellent sight lines.

Stephen De Pledge, Senior Lecturer in Piano at the University of Auckland, joins the New Zealand String Quartet for Ross Harris’s Piano Quintet, commissioned in 2013 by Chamber Music New Zealand for its 2015 Composer Connections series. Paired with Ross’s work is Ernő Dohnanyi’s Piano Quintet no 2, which shows the influence of his native Hungarian folk music. Between these two bookends is one of the great early works of Beethoven, his Quartet in D, op 18/3.
